Obsession movie Characters' Zodiac signs, their Big 3
Obsession (2025), directed by Curry Barker, has taken the cinematic world by storm. This small-budget film ($750,000) has earned over 500 million dollars worldwide. But it's not just about the numbers; viewers have been having many discussions and theories ever since the movie's theatrical release.
This movie meant so much to many watchers, including me. It represented the horror of losing your autonomy, 'nice guys' that aren't actually nice and the extreme version of the saying 'be careful what you wish for'. But what about the more trivial matters? And that, my dear readers, is what the characters’ zodiac signs are.
Nikki Freeman - Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius rising, Pisces moon.
Nikki is such a scorpio, she has a mysterious edge to her. Overall she is deeply romantic while having an easy going approach and of course a little intense . Her determination to free herself was something that could only be attributed to a fixed sign. Nikki has a strong sense of self, she is empathetic and understanding of those who are close to her even strangers. Scorpio suns are of course secretive hence the reason why she was able to hide the friends with benefit thing she had with Ian behind Bear’s back.
Her Sagittarius rising represents her need to explore and her lighthearted nature. She can be blunt which we as an audience easily pick up on when she asks Bear plainly if he likes her more than a friend. Which Bear of course pathetically denies. While then proceeding to snap the one wish willow. Her rising sign hides her deeper more emotional placements, despite her bluntness and need for adventure. I find her to be too empathetic to be a Sagittarius. Even though Sagittarius' are known for their optimism which often leans towards forced positivity; they aren't nice per say, not in the traditional sense.
A Pisces moon represents the dreamer within her, wanting to write a love story not a romance. They are hopeless romantics, always looking for a love story, Pisces moons and suns can also be very humanitarian. They care about having a moral compass. We see this when Nikki gives money to a homeless man (Sarah's money) and when she corrects Sarah's dad (her boss) for calling a customer a Karen. Although Pisces dominant people can be empathetic, there is also a side of them that can overdo the political correctness.
Pisces/Sagittarius placements look for adventure and depth while finding it hard to commit. I felt sorry for Nikki the most, her best friend was secretly jealous of her, Ian was her situationship who couldn't give her the love she wanted and then Bear. We all know what Bear did.
As a writer, I completely understand why Nikki was desperate to leave, writing a book is a big deal and not many people understand the ambition and patience that are needed to finish a book.
With these placements, you can easily see why Nikki and Bear were never meant to be.
(Baron) Bear Bailey - Libra Sun, Cancer rising, Pisces moon
Bear being a Libra sun shouldn’t even be up for debate. They are the founding fathers of “I’m a nice guy". His passivity, his idealisation of romance and addiction to validation is a trait that is easily identified with un-evolved Libras. Bear was able to detach himself emotionally from Nikki's pain and his responsibility. He wasn't concerned about her wellbeing, he cared about keeping the wish by any means necessary. Breaking the fantasy would've broken Bear's flimsy sense of morality, as he would have had to face the biting cold reality that Nikki did not consent to him; physically, emotionally nor romantically. Libra's, like all air signs, love to use plausible deniability as a get out clause. Venus is the planet that rules libra's the planet of love and beauty. Libra's being cardinal air signs love the idea of love and being loved- the hard work that comes with that?
Not so much.
Even if the real Nikki chose him, he would not have been able to handle it.
Un-evolved Libra men have a tendency to ruin the reputations of those around them, in extension their victims. He was able to publicly maintain a neutral front, Sarah and those outside of the core four, believed that he was a victim of freaky Nikki.
Bear is a cancer rising because again it’s another“I’m a nice guy” placement, his cancer placement really popped out in his practise speech to Nikki, cancer placements are very good at garnering wider sympathy, even if they are not so deserving of it. They have a gentle, unassuming demeanour, they can be empathetic to others depending on their temperament that day.
Moon sign - Here is where I am stuck. I am caught between a Taurus moon or a Pisces. Tauruses love the comfort of romance, they can be stubborn and once they have their eyes set on something its hard to shake them. However, Bear could easily be a Pisces moon, it's another lover boy placement. Pisces Moons often don't understand the difference between reality and fantasy. Pisces is ruled by Neptune, the planet of dreams and illusions.
You could argue that Nikki's Pisces moon and Bear’s, reflect each others views on love. He constantly romanticised all the things Nikki did for him, whereas she didn't view it that way at all. Nikki could tell the difference between love and romance.
Bear could not.
Sarah - Aquarius Sun, Capricorn Moon, Aries Rising
I felt bad for Sarah, her end was brutal, physically and emotionally. If only she had locked the car door and opened her acceptance letter before her face turned to mash.
Maybe her story would have been different. Oh and if she had not met up with Bear in the middle of the night...
I nominate her as an Aquarius sun because of her creativity and style. Also her wanting to go into art school, the cool tattoos, it is all very Aquarian.
She was caring to the person who she was fixated on. Aquarius suns tend to treat the people that don’t treat them the best or pay them mind (like Bear) better than the people who care for them. An Aquarius' darkside is that they often blur the line between the socially acceptable no touch/girl code. They may not have a problem going after someone else's partner, especially a friend.
Capricorn moon because she has a dogmatic and sardonic perspective on things. On rewatching the film. I noticed that when Nikki gave the money to the homeless man, her first reaction was that he was going to use the money on drugs, which is a very earth sign, very practical response. Even those who have a soft spot for you they will deliver tough love like Santa on Christmas day.
Sarah is not so much of a romantic as Nikki but it’s still there even if pragmatic:
“I was to your left”
"You need someone more chill"
Capricorns can make it obvious when they like someone, especially if that person is more passive like Bear, they see that person as a score to be had. The Aries rising? more of a gut instinct observation.
Ian - Leo Sun, fire sign Moon, Gemini
Leo sun because Leo men come across as the typical ‘bro’ while being teddy bears. They also have a strong, perhaps childlike understanding of what is right or wrong. Good and evil. Although he was self serving in some instances, he did show genuine care and was protective over Nikki. We see this when he calls the hospital and her dad’s workplace. Him being friends with Bear makes sense, Leo’s and Libras always end up being friends. Leos's tend to have the confidence that Libra's lack, although both these signs want the same thing and have the same amount of ego.
Him wishing for a billion dollars is also just so Leo!
His rising sign is Gemini due to how he jokes, his sneakiness (hiding his sitautionship from Bear) that two sided fake Gemini energy was coming through very strong.
An Aries or a Sagittarius moon because he is not afraid to call out Bear taking advantage of Nikki, also how he shouts at him at the game night for just sitting there, this contrasts with Bear's passive Libra and cancer rising placement. My unpopular opinion is, that even if Ian had told Bear about his situationship with Nikki, Bear would have still made the wish but with more aggression.
All in all, these people were pretty awful friends to one another.
