The Conscious Thoughts

The Stigma Map is an interactive story desktop (only) game which takes on a fantasy map style that takes players and readers on a journey which exposes the different types of stigma that exists when it comes onto the topic mental health especially depression. This project is in alignment with other text based interactive stories such as the Depression Quest (2013) by Zoe Quinn.
The Map was designed using Inkarnate and then developed using Twine Harlowe 3. The game is NOT meant to be played on phones and is strictly a desktop game. There is music sound and narration. The writing is a balance of poetic and non fiction informative story telling.

The mission
The goal of this project is to expose the casually used yet harmful phrases that are told to people who are experiencing depression. The game exposes and unpacks the uncomfortable reality of what it is like to experience depression and how stigma, offhand statements and toxic mindsets can truly hurt someone. Leading them down dark lonely paths, putting their lives and mental health at risk. The goal of this project is to educate people on the matter of depression and to become more comfortable with talking about the uncomfortable.
To make the project richer and engaged with the wider community, I made sure to get participants to respond and give their experiences with stigma and their mental health. We also partnered with Patient Voices an organisation which is committed to bringing insight through digital storytelling. Responding to the urgent need to foster understanding and care between healthcare stakeholders. To find out more please click here. You will be able to find the game on stories section.
